Helen Justine Doherty

Our lives are steeped in stories and I am fascinated by the potential of a painted ceramic object to suggest a story.
The translation of narratives into ceramics is a historical tradition reflected in Greek art from 6BC, Iznik ware, Italian Maiolica, Delftware and more recently, the work of Hylton Nel, Grayson Perry and Stephen Dixon. My work is driven by the narrative element, informed by media stories, myths and literature. In some instances the stories are fragmentary pure fantasy, others are a humorous, contemporary, feminist take on traditional, predictable narratives.

Thesis: An analysis of the narrative in contemporary ceramics.
