(Marie) Therese Newman
My work is concerned with the fragility of life and the transience of earthly things. I find my inspiration in the memento mori and Vanitas traditions and in the clay itself, which I feel has an ephemeral quality. My forms are created by nature and transformed into ceramic sculptures by the firing process leaving fragile crusts formed on things that once were. I use a combination of clay, fibre, plants, wood, metal and glass in pieces that are often too delicate to touch.
Thesis: For the love of God: Damien Hirst’s Diamond Skull and its relationship to the memento mori and Vanitas traditions.
